1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Bible Verses for Comfort
In seasons of sorrow, comfort often comes quietly. These passages speak of a God who draws near to the brokenhearted and carries those who are weary.
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
1Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
God is close to the brokenhearted
The Psalms are full of honest pain — and of God's nearness in it. You do not need to hide your grief to be comforted.
Comfort we can share
Paul writes that God comforts us in our troubles so that we can comfort others. Sharing a verse can be a simple way to stand with someone.
